DECEMBER 2008: SIDE PLANK (VASITHASANA)

Instructions:
  • Being in plank pose, finding stability in plank before moving into side arm balance.
  • Place the left hand directly under the center of the chest and press firmly into the earth as you rotate the right arm up into the air and bring the torso to balance over the left arm.
  • Place the right foot on top of, or just behind, the left foot.
  • Lengthen the body from feet to the crown of the head and create a vertical axis of energy
    through the earms.
  • Keep the shoulders relaxed away from the ears and the shoulder blades drawn down the back.
  • Press fully down throguh the supporting hand as you hug the shoulder joint firmly around the upper arm bone.
  • Engage your core to fully support the weight and structure of the pelvis.

Modifications
:
  • One knee bent and pressing into the earth to support the pose.
  • Place a block under the hip for support.
  • One foot rests in front of the other on the floor.

Benefits
:

This pose strengthens the shoulder girdle when practiced progressively and carefully. It increases abdominal strength, and firms and tones the entire body.

Contraindications:
Contraindicated for recent abdominal surgery, hight blood ressure, sinuse or eye problems. Those with shoulder or neck pain or injury should use movfications.
